domain name registration lapsed How do I re-reg without paying the high fee to the current holding company?

My domain name is still in my name but I can’t register it anywhere else until it goes public. Is there a way around this?

No, there is no way around this.

You can try to wait to until the holding period is over and register for the name again, but that can be dangerous since anyone can grab the name before you do.
