Preparing Active Directory

| DNS | By: registrar

Setting up the Domain Name Prefix. Installing DNS Service. Configure Forward/Reverse Lookup. Configures and Verify TCP/IP settings. Domain Naming Prefix: Is the default domain name used when only the hostname is given. In order for Dynamic Domain Naming Server (DDNS) to work correctly, you must have the prefix preconfigured. By default, the prefix is not set. Forward Lookup Zone: Used to resolve a FQDN (ie dc01.altriox.local) to an IP address (ie 192.168.1.5). Reverse Lookup Zone: Used to resolve an IP address to FQDN, and is used for troubleshooting purposes.

There is no Host A record in the reverse lookup zone? does this matter? as other vids are showing that you need to create a Host record and selectr the PTR in the look up zone first?

Yeah, I was originally going to redo this video and finish up the series with audio (and fix the prefix mistake, should be suffix). I just wanted to see how people liked them, before I put any more effort. Problem is I got busy after this video and never got back to it.

Actually, the server was completely up to date at the time. The yellow shield in the right hand corner is asking me to configure Automatic Updates.

Yes, of course active directory will setup DNS for you. When I was making this video, and originally planning on make a whole series, this would have been pointed out and shown. The reason I decided to show how to setup DNS manually was to show people what essentially was being done by the DCPROMO wizard. There are plenty of real world applications for this as well.

Come on people, there is more to Windows administration than wizards.

It’s not necessary to set the Primary DNS Suffix as depicted in the beginning of the video in order to install AD. DCPROMO will set it for you. DNS services installation can be done during the DCPromo process as well as creating the zone in DNS.
