Think of DNS as a phonebook. You use it to look up names like http://www.google.com and find it’s IP address (sort of like an internet phone number; very simplistic view). Computers on the internet connect to each other using the IP adresses.

A DNS server translates domain names into IP addresses. Usually, your Internet provider will automatically give your computer or router the address of a DNS server to use. But if you have your own DNS server or want to use the services of a company like OpenDNS.com you can put the addresses of your preferred DNS servers in the blank.

DNS stands for Domain Name Server. It is the device that translates the names you type in your address bar to the IP address of the website you are looking for.
