When you want to configure the Windows Server 2003 DNS on an existing DNS Server environment, then you have to first start the DNS service on it. After this, you have to delegate certain zones on it. Then you have to create new zones on the Windows Server 2003 DNS Server. Follow these steps to perform this:

Click on Start, point to Programs, click on the Administrative Tools and then click on the DNS. Then click on the DNS Server object for your server and then expand the server object to expand the tree. After this, right-click on the Forward Lookup Zones, and then click on the New Zone. Then click on the Next. Click on the Primary zone for the creation of a master copy of the new zone. Then click on the Next. Then you have to type the name of the new zone and then click on the Next.Click on the Accept to accept the default file name for the new zone file, then click on the Next. Then click on Allow any dynamic updates and then click on Next. After this, click on Finish.

If you want to turn on the new zones for the dynamic updates, you have to follow these steps:

In the DNS Management Console, click on the DNS Server object for your server. Then expand the server object to expand the tree. After this, right-click on the server object and then click on the Properties. On the General tab, select the Allow dynamic updates drop-down box. Then click on Yes and after that click on OK. Repeat these steps for turning on every new zone for the dynamic updates on the Windows Server 2003 DNS Server.

After the initial configuration of Windows Server 2003 DNS, you are not able to detect the DNS servers. This happens because system allocates the new DNS server as a root server. Due to this, new DNS server cannot forward any name resolution queries. In this situation, you must remove the root forward lookup zone. For performing this, follow these steps:

Click on Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools and then click on the DNS. After this, click on the DNS Server object for your server and then expand the server object to expand the tree. Then click on the Forward Lookup Zones to expand it. Click the zone that is highlighted with a period and then press DELETE. Click OK to confirm that you want to delete the zone.
